We seek to recruit four fellows as a cohort that will mutually support each other in their project based objectives throughout the entirety of the fellowship. This team will work closely with each other as well as the city departments and organizational leadership. The focus areas for the fellowships are: Digital Services, Research & Prototyping, Engagement, and Visual Design.  Each area of focus is described further below.

Digital Services – Rotation with Strategic Planning

Do you want to help bridge the gap between Gainesville’s services, technology and citizens?

The Digital Services Fellowship may be an opportunity for you to make integral enhancements to the systems utilized by our citizens to access services, obtain information and data, and communicate with the city, like dataGNV and 311GNV.

You may be a good fit if you are an avid coder or hacker for social good, enjoy diving into large amounts of data, or are seeking to improve government tech usability.

We are looking for someone who has the:

  • Ability to use extract, transform, and load (ETL) software, like SAFE FME
  • Knowledge in writing scripts and code to automate processes
  • Proficiency in programming/coding language(s), like Python
  • Experience in editing or developing web and/or mobile applications and interfaces
  • Comfortability in maintaining and integrating large databases

Research & Prototyping – Rotation with Citizen-Centered Gainesville

Are you interested in testing new ideas which could help Gainesville become the most citizen-centered city in the world?

The Research & Prototyping Fellowship may be an opportunity for you to gather information on citizens’ experiences and quality of life and develop ideas for prototyping new and different ways for service delivery, like how a citizen navigates purchasing a bus pass.

You may be a good fit if you are inquisitive and are interested in facilitating small-scale experiments around new ideas.

We are looking for someone who has the:

  • Understanding of survey methodologies and practices, like statistical validity and demographically representative
  • Ability to construct surveys and analyze qualitative and quantitative data
  • Comfortability with a user experience approach to service delivery, like human-centered design
  • Knowledge of creating prototypes and pilots for testing new ideas to citizen service delivery
  • Experience with conducting broad research and coalescing findings
  • Proficiency in crafting and delivering professional presentations to executive leadership

Engagement – Rotation with Communications

Would you like to help transform the communication and engagement opportunities for Gainesville’s citizens?

The Engagement Fellowship may be an opportunity for you to draft website and social media content, organizing a community event or meeting, or identify a new strategy to involve citizens in an important decision-making process, like budget planning.

You may be a good fit if you are friendly and community-minded, enjoy conversing with people from all walks of life, and are a social-media enthusiast.

We are looking for someone who has the:

  • Ability to draft marketing plans and implementation guides
  • Comfortability in identifying new approaches to citizen engagement in policy and decision making processes
  • Experience in developing content specific to various outreach mediums, like the city’s website and social media accounts
  • Understanding of how to plan, organize, and host public events to facilitate citizen outreach

Visual Design – Rotation with Citizen-Centered Gainesville & Communications

Are you inspired to help simplify complex city topics through creative design?

The Visual Design Fellowship may be an opportunity for you to create charts, graphs, and infographics, to design a visual story, and to identify new tools for helping citizens understand complex information, like the employment process for city job applicants.

You may be a good fit if you are creative with an aesthetic awareness, enjoy using your knack for graphic design, and are inspired to share good stories.

We are looking for someone who has the:

  • Skills to interpret a strategic marketing plan for creating style guides, logo designs, and presentation templates
  • Ability to translate information and create stories through visual design elements, using tools like Adobe InDesign and Venngage to craft infographics
  • Experience in developing visualizations to communicate complex topics, like quantitative financial data using charts and graphs
  • Comfortability in front-end web design and visual asset development for city’s digital services platforms, like open government applications and the city website
