We seek to recruit several fellows as a cohort who will mutually support each other in project based objectives throughout the entirety of an academic year. The team will work closely with each other as well as many city departments and organizational leaders. The focus areas for the fellowships are: Community Engagement, Digital Services, Experience Design, and Visual Design.  Each area of focus is described further below.

Community Engagement

Would you like to help transform the way the community and its local government connect and engage?

The Community Engagement Fellowship may be an opportunity for you to draft website and social media content, organize a community event or meeting, or identify a new strategy to involve citizens in important decision-making processes, like budget planning.

You may be a good fit if you are community-minded, enjoy connecting with people from all walks of life, and are a social-media enthusiast.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Identify new approaches to engagement to support informed decision making
  • Draft marketing and communication strategies and develop implementation plans
  • Create and edit content for various outreach channels, like email, web, and social media
  • Plan, organize, and facilitate community events or meetings


Digital Services

Do you want to help bridge the gap between services, technology, and the Gainesville community?

The Digital Services Fellowship may be an opportunity to make integral enhancements to systems used by the community to access services, obtain data and information, and communicate with the city, like dataGNV and 311GNV.

You may be a good fit if you are an avid coder or hacker, enjoy diving into big data, or seek to improve government tech usability.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Write scripts and code to automate processes, with languages such as Python
  • Develop and edit web and mobile applications
  • Transform and maintain large datasets
  • Translate business needs into technical requirements and bridge the gap between users and technical resources

Experience Design

Are you interested in testing new ideas to help Gainesville become the most people-centered city in the world?

The Experience Design Fellowship may be an opportunity for you to gather data on user experiences, analyze and form insights, and create prototypes of new service delivery models, like how a person hosts and permits a community event.

You may be a good fit if you are inquisitive, have a passion for customer experience, and enjoy facilitating experiments around new ideas.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Practice Human-Centered Design methodologies to create innovative solutions
  • Lead generative research activities to understand pain points and needs
  • Define requirements, workflows, and diagrams based on processes
  • Conduct usability testing of designs to iterate and refine concept
  • Construct surveys and analyze qualitative and quantitative data
  • Design digital prototypes for testing new ideas

Visual Design

Are you inspired to help the community understand complex topics through creative design?

The Visual Design Fellowship may be an opportunity for you to create charts, graphs, and infographics, design a visual story, and identify new ways to communicate complex information, like policy development processes.

You may be a good fit if you are creative, have an eye for aesthetic design, and are inspired to create meaningful stories.

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Transform ideas into style guides and presentation templates
  • Design digital and print assets, using tools like the Adobe suite
  • Create visualizations to communicate complex topics, like financial data using charts and graphs
