The College of Journalism and Communications welcomed pioneer sportswriter Claire Smith to speak at the Bob Graham Center on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora as part of the Great Storytellers Series.
Smith has covered baseball for more than three decades, including a notable seven years as a national baseball writer and columnist for The New York Times. She became a news editor at ESPN in 2007. Smith was the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Baseball Writers' Association of America's J.G. Taylor Spink award for laudable contributions to baseball writing. She is the award's first female honoree.
Smith discussed her craft as well as her life and career as a female African-American sportswriter.
